One of the joys of teaching and being a parent is being able to watch life through the eyes of a child. But how often do we actually do anything about what we see through children’s eyes? I often have to remind myself to slow down and truly listen to children since many of their ideas and statements can be enlightening and profound. We live in this world of adults being in charge and knowing more than children. What a different world this would be if it were led by children.
One of my favorite sites, and one that you will see me refer to often is www.ted.com. TED – Technology, Entertainment, Design devotes itself to ideas worth spreading. I discovered it a couple years ago and have been inspired by it ever since. A speaker at the most recent TED conference, Adora Svitak, discusses “childish” thinking and what adults can learn from kids. Again, another reminder that there is quite a bit we do not give children enough credit.
What have you learned from your children/students?
