August is a great time to expect warm weather…so we had hoped. It is Seattle after all. Even though the weather did not support our efforts, we continued with our plan to explore water. This week we did a few activities with water and bubbles. With the
cold weather it was a little challenging and we couldn’t get as wet as we were hoping for but we still had a lot of fun learning about water. Our “science project” of the week was to mix different substances in water. We did sugar next to sand, salt next to pepper and vinegar next to oil. We compared results and talked about how salt and sugar dissolved in water while sand stayed at the bottom and pepper made us sneeze. Elsa and Ruby were excited to notice the sugar and salt “disappearing” in the water and tried stirring faster to accelerate the process 🙂
We also learned about the different states of water; liquid, solid(ice) and gas. Everybody was specially enthusiastic about the melting ice and the gas. We used soda as a representative and it was messy and lots of fun! We drew our results with chalk on black paper and the floor! Elsa was the leader of this idea and the rest followed her. Chloe was specially excited about drawing on the floor. Next we learned about the different places were we find water. We worked on a collective drawing of rivers, lakes, snowed mountains,
swamps and oceans. We looked at images and talked about the importance of water. Afterwards we watered the trees and did some finger painting.
Finally we played with different sized bubbles, overall a great week for everybody!
Our book of the week was “Big Red Tub”. I think Pete’s new favorite, he loves to follow the words: I splash, you splash! 🙂 In our indoor group time Allison grabbed 2 sticks from the blocks container and danced with them, it was pretty adorable! Arlin followed Ruby at clean up time and was very helpful, the bikes and sandbox are still his favorite 🙂
