We are a few weeks in now. How are you doing on your resolutions? It is that time of year when everything feels new and a time to start fresh. Many of us go into the new year with all kinds of new goals I like to call them intentions) for ourselves – exercising more, getting in shape, better diet, connecting with friends, etc. How many of us though ever have resolutions that involve our children. In the spirit of motivation and good intentions, let’s include our kiddos.
Let’s get those children outside. As adults, we are interested in improving our overall health and well being, so we tend to start the New Year around getting healthy and exercising. Let’s set that intention for our children. It wouldn’t take long to figure out after one conversation with me that I have strong beliefs around the importance of getting children outside in nature. Plenty of research shows the benefits of playing outside including overall health and well being. Children who play outside have increased physical ability, better concentration, build confidence and foster language and collaborative skills. It also grounds them and develops their observation and awareness. What I enjoy most about being outside is one hand its simplicity but on the other hand its magnificence. Outdoors can be infinite and it is free. Who, as a parent, doesn’t like that? All it takes is appropriate clothing and gear with a great attitude….and GO! Your children can thrive for hours outside leaving no rock overturned. Mud, leaves, bugs, moss – you name it! Their minds are wide open to take in the sights and sounds of the outdoors. The younger you start them the better, but it is never too late. APA recommends at least one hour of intense physical activity per day for children 2 and up. So why not make that outdoor play?
Some of my favorite places to go:
For those that are willing to leave the rock…
Things you can do with your children while outdoors:
Bring magnifying glasses and take a little closer look…at anything!
Notice changes from day to day or week to week in the same park
