Happy New Year! I am back and hope you will join me on this journey as I explore the ins and out of parenting, learning and education and child development. Over the past 20 years I have worked with children in a variety of settings: home, school, hospitals and institutions. It is my deep joy and connection to children and fascination with how they come to being that keeps me coming back, but it is more recently (10 years or so) where I have been refining and becoming more purposeful with my interactions. I have come to know that the deeper joy lies more in connection than separateness in the circle of life and the science behind it. As I reflect, analyze and assess the ways in which children and adults learn and interact best, I have refined the approach we take at The Cove School over the years. My quest to shift the perspective of “good education and schools” starts at The Cove. It is now my hope to pass it along to families who will pass it along to their children and allow the cycle to begin again. The Cove School is more about facilitating the learning process. In other words, it is about how you learn not what you learn. It is preparing the environment to support the ideas and exploration from children. It is real learning with intention, creating value and meaning. It is the beginning understandings of creating human communities. It is moving back to the basics and creating space. That space that allows the pause, the pause between reaction and response. That pause that brings you to that moment of choice. If you read this far, I hope you will engage in our journey on finding pause. Our implementation of mindfulness, social emotional learning and ecological literacy is somewhat akin to the concept of slow food…part of the slow movement (Carl Honoré: In praise of slowness http://on.ted.com/rcd9) I will be exploring the concept of slow living and education in the context of structuring living and learning around meaning and fulfillment. As it is for our little ones, the value is in the process so I look forward to sharing the process of this journey.
