As one of the primary goals in the development of writing skills, we want to see the formation of letter shapes. In order for this to occur, a several steps need to take place. The first being lines and dots. Children need to learn how to make marks on a paper that soon take form of lines and dots.
The next would be enclosures. This is necessary for forming letters and cursive script happens only when this is made anti-clockwise. Once a child can form enclosures (circles), he can draw faces and objects. Then he can start interpreting the marks and understand the need for writing and labeling.
My 2.5 year old discovered writing about a month or 6weeks ago and has grown into a serious obsession. He has his own pad and paper and a grown up pen and he lays on the floor and writes like crazy. In the pictures below, he went from straight lines to enclosures in a matter of days. He writes at the table and curled up in a little ball on the floor. He LOVES to write. He writes everything…”I am writing mommy, I am writing daddy” to “what do you want me to write?”
What is your first memory of writing?
