Last week I wrote a post on how reading is developmental. I talked about children needing laptime before they are ready to read. Here are some ideas for laptime:
* Read to your child – have them sit on your lap, have them turn the pages
* Teach them the sound and the name for any particular letter
* Have your child locate items and point to them in the book
* When introducing letters to your child, repeat the sound several times – ex. say “Cuh, cuh, cat”
*Be silly and play tongue twisters “five funny frogs”
* Let your child take a turn – have them read to you and tell you what is happening by using the pictures.
* When teaching letters use all the senses – make letters out of clay or pipe cleaners, have them trace letters with their finger, draw letters in the sand, play with magnet letters on a cookie sheet of refrigerator
* Remember to let them determine how long laptime is – their attention spans are short. You can always try again later.
No matter what you do – keep it fun!!
