I write a post every Saturday that is like a week in review for the preschool. This is in lieu of sending out a newsletter or providing daily notes home. Today is a little different because I am going to write about some events that occurred during this mornings preschool program.
We follow a daily routine everyday… except today. By 9:20 I was getting kids ready for outdoor play. This was almost an hour earlier then we usually go outside. Something wasn’t working in my classroom. A little background on my class – three days a week I have all boys and 2 days a week I have primarily girls. The boys came in this morning and were ready to go. After settling in to circle time or trying to at least, we started or work time. For reasons unbeknown to me, the attention spans that are typically10 minutes or so per activity were about 30 seconds to a minute. After attempting to regain order numerous times, I had them clean up and head on out. We spent the next almost an hour and a half outside. There was some independent play as well as organized games and a little nature walk through the yard. They had a blast. When they came inside for the last half hour which consists of a small group activity and then a larger group activity they seemed much more attentive.
The sequence of events today started me thinking about how to teach boys. It renewed my interest in finding ways to help boys succeed in the classroom. As a mother of two boys, this is a big concern of mine. Classrooms are not typically set up for boys. We need to find ways to ensure they reach their greatest potential.
How are you seeing gender differences playing a role in your classroom? or your home?
